For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
CONTEXT – PAST: answer what this verse meant in context to the original recipients in the past.
If there was any uncertainty in the verse 15, Paul makes it very clear in verse 16. Jesus is God. “By him” means that it was in Jesus or by means of him.
UNIVERSAL APPLICATION – EVERYONE: re-write the verse in your own words to reflect the universal truth that applies to everyone.
Jesus created all things. All things means ALL things. They were created because of him and in him and through him and for him.
PERSONAL APPLICATION – PRESENT: what does this verse mean to you personally and how should you apply it today in the present.
Because of the fact that Jesus created everything, then he is God and we should know our rightful place. My job is to worship him, bring glory to him, and do what he asks at all costs.
