Colossians 1:15 ESV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
CONTEXT – PAST: answer what this verse meant in context to the original recipients in the past.
This was a bold statement. The Colossians were from a mixed group of religious backgrounds. Paul is claiming Jesus as God.
UNIVERSAL APPLICATION – EVERYONE: re-write the verse in your own words to reflect the universal truth that applies to everyone.
This entire passage of Colossians 1:15-23 focuses on the preeminence of Jesus. Preeminence means the superiority of Christ. Paul is calling Jesus out as the image of God and His firstborn over everything else.
PERSONAL APPLICATION – PRESENT: what does this verse mean to you personally and how should you apply it today in the present.
If Jesus is preeminent, then He would and should demand my attention and allegiance. This is an important part of raising my view of who Jesus is and how I should live my life in light of this fact.
